Millage Rates
Millage Rates and Property Tax Calculation
The amount of property tax due is determined by multiplying the appropriate millage rate by the assessed value of a property, less any exemptions. Millage rates are set by the State of Alabama, Marengo County, local cities, and other taxing agencies. Assessed values depend on the property’s classification and use.
A mill equals one-tenth of one cent (0.001). When all taxing authorities’ millage rates are combined, the total tax due can be calculated.
Example: An owner-occupied residence (Class III property) valued at $100,000 has an assessed value of 10% × $100,000 = $10,000. If the millage rate is 26 mills (0.026), then the tax owed is: $10,000 × 0.026 = $260. This is the calculated tax before any exemptions are applied.
